Meet the Mavericks: The Real Deal

A little about us. . .

Every woman with a vision has a story that fuels it, Here’s a little bit of ours.

We’re Beth and Victoria. Both kids of entrepreneurs, brought up in tight families, and frequently accused of being Type A by friends and foes alike. We each married a very supportive spouse, and our spouses pushed us to start our own business and not look back. Those marriages have since taken two different paths: Victoria’s is still going strong. Beth’s fell apart after 24 years in a spectacle for the ages. But she lived to tell about it with a lot of help from – wait for it – Victoria, of course.

We have nine kids between us ranging in age from five to 23, and our worlds begin and end with them. They are our biggest cheerleaders, which is readily apparent from the number of times they text us with inspirational messages such as, “Get a life, Mom,” and the constant queries of “What do you do all day?” which Victoria fields, again and again, during her multi-school drop off each morning.

Beth powered through her twenties earning a law degree, working at a steel company, and spending time at a venture firm before realizing she wasn’t very employable due to her inability to blindly follow orders or accept the status quo. She promptly started her first communications firm. She was lucky enough to convince Victoria to jump from the IT field and join her, and the rest is history.

We immediately clicked, with Beth mentoring Victoria for a decade and Victoria acting as Beth’s right hand and emotional support animal in perpetuity. Together, we have been mocked, targeted, sued, fired, and left for dead on more than one occasion by the various actors in our business lives (mostly middle management bros still working for other people). We have worked side-by-side for 20 years and are each other’s ride or dies.

During this time, we built and ultimately monetized two different businesses, one for one-times revenue and the other for five-times revenue. Safe to say we learned A LOT in the second business.

The Female Maverick Is Our Next Chapter; It Could Be Yours, Too…

We created The Female Maverick because we truly believe women with a few years of corporate experience can do exactly what we did – and faster with fewer mistakes if they take the time to learn from the missteps we’ve already made. Also, because our heads exploded in retirement – Beth lasted about five months before jumping back into work. And just a few weeks and a little bit of coaxing later, Victoria was right back by her side.

The Female Maverick is meant to be a little bit memoir, relatable stories of the highs and lows of building and selling two services businesses. It’s also a little bit of a “how to” manual, born from our own experience and input from a few kickass smart women we’ve met along the way. The highlight is our carefully curated shortlists of “musts” and “don’ts” that will help keep you focused and on track and make the most of every minute of your precious time.

Mostly, we want it to leave you energized and confident that you can get SH** done, just like we did. We hope something here sets off a spark (or delivers the kick in the you-know-what that you need) to launch the business or find the career path that will have you jumping out of bed every morning. Or, at least, not ceaselessly hitting the snooze.

And, if along the way you meet your own ride or die, it will make the entire experience doubly as rewarding for your both!
